Project Overview
Tudhikhel Multifunctional Park is designed as a resilient public space inspired by Nepal’s topography — Himal, Pahad, and Terai. It addresses Kathmandu’s growing urban issues, such as a lack of greenery, limited open space, parking shortages, and pedestrian congestion.
The design introduces separated pedestrian paths and a dedicated cycle lane to reduce crowding and support safe distancing during emergencies like pandemics. Existing trees are preserved and enhanced with circular recycled-plastic seating inspired by the traditional Chautari.
An underground parking structure is integrated beneath the landscape, helping reduce surface-level traffic and supporting vehicle-free streets in surrounding areas. Its organically shaped entrances double as shaded bus stops and natural ventilation shafts. In emergencies, this underground space can function as temporary shelters or medical facilities.
Overall, the park creates a flexible, green, and sustainable urban space that improves mobility, enhances public comfort, and strengthens Kathmandu’s disaster resilience.
